42, the indie behind Paramount+ comedy-drama The Flatshare, is expanding into comedy and unscripted entertainment with the appointment of former Tiger Aspect managing director Ben Cavey.

As head of comedy and entertainment, Cavey will be based in the transatlantic company’s Los Angeles office and will oversee development of projects in both TV and film and manage talent.

He will also develop co-productions with 3 Arts Entertainment and Lionsgate Television, which includes a first-look deal with Lionsgate Television.

Cavey spent 13 years at Tiger Aspect, where he co-created BBC3 comedy Bad Education with Jack Whitehall, created Sky Arts sketch show Psychobitches and exec-ed a slate that included ITV’s Benidorm and BBC3’s Man Like Mobeen.

Most recently, he spent four years as Netflix’s director of original comedy programming, where he commissioned Murderville, the US remake of Tiger Aspect’s Murder In Successville, as well as series with Kevin Hart, Tim Robinson and Charlie Brooker and a string of stand-up specials.

To date, 42 is best known for dramas such as BBC/HBO co-pro The Girl Before, Netflix’s The English Game, BBC/Netflix co-pro Watership Down and ITV’s Wild Bill.

Josh Varney, a partner at 42, hailed Cavey’s “impeccable taste and well-proven instincts as a storyteller and tastemaker”.
