The production of eight high-volume BBC radio programmes is up for grabs as indie Somethin’ Else scales back its output.

The BBC has opened a fast-turnaround commissioning round for the shows, which include Radio 2’s Sounds of the 90s with Fearne Cotton and 6 Music’s Giles Peterson Saturday Show.

Somethin’ Else has pulled out of contracts for the shows for reasons undisclosed, but is understood to plan to continue to make other BBC shows such as Radio 4’s Gardeners Question Time. Its output also includes Liza Tarbuck’s Saturday Radio 2 show.

The indie, has been making BBC radio shows for more than 30 years, was bought by Sony two years ago. It also makes commercial podcasts including Kermode & Mayo’s Take, having previously produced the pair’s previous BBC Radio 5Live movie show.

The corporation wants 500 word submissions by 23 October with pitching set to take place between 1 and 13 November.

The briefs are available on the BBC Commissioning website.
