Entries have opened for this year’s Grierson Awards – with a new category and a special freelancer rate in the mix.
Best Popular Culture Documentary will recognise single documentaries, or an episode from a strand or series, that depicts people, events, movements or trends that have had a major impact on popular culture in recent years.
Meanwhile, the Grierson Trust is supporting freelancers with the introduction of a discount fee for shorts that have been produced independently – with no backing from a distributor, digital platform or broadcaster – for the Best Documentary Short category.
In all, the awards span 15 categories across the documentary genre.
Last year’s winners included Channel 4’s Grenfell: the Untold Story, ITV Exposure doc Afghanistan: No Country for Women and the BBC’s We are Black and British.
To be eligible for this year’s awards, entries must have had their first UK screening between 1 June 2023 and 31 May 2023.
Entries close on 31 May, with an initial shortlist to be announced on 22 July. This year’s awards take place at the Roundhouse in Camden on 6 November.
