A freelance comedy producer whose credits include BBC3’s Dreaming whilst Black and the pilot of In My Skin has set up an indie to champion and represent “the 94%” of the population who were not privately educated.
Gina Lyons said she wanted Gobby Girl Productions to “celebrate the underdog and promote their voices”, citing research that found 40% of Brits nominated for key awards in the Oscars, BAFTAs and Mercury prize over the last decade went to private school.
Lyons founded the company to house her projects as well as those of emerging and unrepresented writers from diverse backgrounds.
A working-class female and mother, Lyons was one of the first cohort of Bafta’s Elevate Producers in 2022 and last year was named as one of Film London’s Lodestars.
She recently produced Dinner with the Parents, Big Talk’s US remake of its Channel 4 comedy Friday Night Dinner, which is coming to CBS and Amazon Freevee soon.
Her other credits include Avalon’s Sky/FX comedy Breeders and a series of short films, and she currently has two comedy features in development.
Lyons has also worked as a talent booker on MTV Cribs International and has held a variety of producer roles on comedy and entertainment shows including BBC3's Phoneswap, Comedy Central's Impractical Jokers and ITV's Safeword.
