Banijay-backed scripted indie Conker Pictures is branching out to Northern Ireland, just over a year since setting up in London.

Co-founder Kim Varvell, a former Apple TV+ drama commissioner, is relocating from London to Belfast to head Conker Pictures NI.

With support from Northern Ireland Screen, the offshoot plans to develop contemporary original drama with global appeal using local writers, talent and crews.

“The region is teeming with creativity, inspiring story tellers and incredible talent,” Varvell said.

Co-founder Tommy Bulfin, who commissioned Belfast-set police drama Blue Lights when he was a BBC commissioner, will remain in London and the pair will continue to own the company jointly.

“I have had the good fortune to work on many productions in Northern Ireland and I have always been blown away by the talent and professionalism on show there,” said Bulfin.

“Having a base in Belfast will allow Conker to really make roots in the region and nurture creative relationships. Northern Ireland is home to some of the very best crews and creative talent in the industry. I am very excited by the potential and know that Irish stories and talent will resonate worldwide.”
