The BBC has described ob-doc series Paramedics on Scene as a “pivotal cog” in developing factual talent as producer Firecrest Films prepares to help more crew take the next steps in their career.

Glasgow-based Firecrest will continue its talent development scheme on the show, hacing secured a double order of 20 episodes across a sixth and seventh series.

To date, more than 30 crew members, including researchers, self-shooting producer/directors, production managers, editors, series producers and execs, have been on the scheme.

Firecrest’s talent development team won the inaugural Impact award at this year’s RTS Scotland Programme Awards for its efforts to date.

BBC Scotland commissioner Tony Nellany said the series is “a pivotal cog in our strategy for developing behind the scenes talent in the documentary sector here”.

Firecrest head of documentaries Mick McAvoy added: “I look forward to working with a new team of talented production personnel as they hone their skills whilst capturing dramatic and emotional stories that give a unique and insightful perspective on the amazing work of the Scottish Ambulance Service.”

Series six is being filmed across Scotland this summer.

The double order follows Channel 4’s recent decision to pause production on its long-established blue-light ob doc series 24 Hours in A&E, which usually films in Nottingham over the autumn and is then edited in Manchester.

The series typically employs around 190 freelancers per series.

The broadcaster has said it has a backlog of completed episodes that it has yet to air.
