Fremantle UK has closed Label1, the indie behind BBC doc series Hospital and Saving Lives in Cardiff.

The super-indie’s UK chief Amelia Brown cited the “challenging economic backdrop” as the chief factor in its decision, which is part of creating a “more effective, coordinated and streamlined approach” for the future.

Set up seven years ago, initially as an ITV Studios company, Label1 has five full-time employees, including chief executive Lorraine Charker-Phillips and chief operating officer Jo Taylor.

In a statement, the departing duo thanked the staff and the production teams and contributors who had worked on their shows, including the “new talent who we hope will continue to have creative opportunities despite the challenging TV landscape”.

Label1 is also behind Channel 4’s Five Guys a Week and The Job Interview, UKTV’s Nurses on the Ward, BBC1’s Soldier and ITV1’s Worlds Collide: The Manchester Bombing.

Fremantle UK will rehouse its development slate and returning shows elsewhere within its network of companies.
