Hungry Bear Media’s BBC1 doc Me and the Voice in My Head is in the running for three Grierson Awards, while a trio of Mindhouse Productions shows have secured nominations.

The indies lead the way on this year’s shortlists, which are dominated by the BBC with 16 nominations, followed by Channel 4 with 12 and Netflix with 11.

Me and the Voice in My Head [main picture] has earned nominations for best science documentary, best single documentary – domestic, and best documentary presenter for Joe Tracini.

Mindhouse’s spread of nods spans the best documentary series category for Sky four-parter Lockerbie; best music documentary for co-founder Louis Theroux’s BBC interview with Pete Doherty; and best history documentary for BBC three-parter The Space Shuttle That Fell to Earth.

Story Films, meanwhile has two films competing with Me and the Voice in My Head for best single documentary – domestic: C4 doc Accused: The Hampstead Paedophile Hoax, and Sky’s Otto Baxter: Not a F***ing Horror Story, a co-production with Archface Films. Rounding out the shortlist is Flicker Productions’ ITV film Ellie Simmonds: Finding My Secret Family.

The shortlist for inaugural category best popular culture documentary comprises in-house BBC one-off Arena – Being Kae Tempest; Acme TV’s BBC show Big Zuu Goes to Mecca; Paramount+ documentary Milli Vanilli (Keep on Running Pictures/Fulwell 73/MRC); and Roast Beef Productions’ Channel 4 two-parter Spacey Unmasked.

Opposite Lockerbie, the documentary series contenders are two C4 series - Candour Productions two-parter The Push: Murder on the Cliff and Wonderhood Studios’ Evacuation - and Raw’s Netflix series American Nightmare.
