BBC3 is inviting indies in the West Midlands to pitch ideas for “a retrospective, scandalous story with fresh journalism and revelation”.
In its brief for the 60-minute current affairs doc, the BBC said it wants “attention-grabbing” treatments of stories that reflect some of the biggest issues facing young people in the UK.
The proposal should have “journalism at its heart” in its treatment of a story that has happened in the past five years.
The pitch is the first opportunity to be offered through the West Midlands IP Fund, a partnership between the BBC, Create Central and Creative UK.
It is open to any indie that has developed at least one 30-minute doc in the past five years for a UK broadcaster or streamer.
The BBC said it is particularly open to strong ideas that explore extortion, scams and fake identities; celebrity and pop culture scandals, and ‘extraordinary tales of being young in modern Britain’.
For guidance, it directs potential pitchers towards a string of docs such as Firecrest Films’ Liar: The Fake Grooming Scandal [pictured], Minnow Films’ Bad Influencer: The Great Insta Con and in-house doc A Very British Cult.
Submissions are due by 21 November, with up to three indies then selected for £5,000 to further develop their idea.
