A new scripted indie launched by a long-time collaborator with Shane Meadows aims to nurture the next generation of Sheffield’s working class talent.

Nickie Sault, who has worked with the writer-director since his 2005 breakthrough feature This is England and was Bafta-nominated for producing his Channel 4 series The Virtues, has launched the company Class 5.

Over the next year, it will sit alongside not-for-profit offshoot Class 5 Crew, which will identify and sustain working class production staff.

“At Class 5, every collaborator regardless of rank or role, is welcomed into a safe environment where their voice is encouraged and valued,” said Sault, who also produced BBC1 drama series The Outlaws and World on Fire.

Class 5’s first project is Rare Singles, a film adaptation of the latest novel by Benjamin Myers, whose earlier book The Gallows Pole Sault produced for BBC2 with Element Pictures, Big Arty Productions and A24.

Myers said: “Nickie Sault has had a huge hand in making some of the most original and powerful drama in recent years and has been directly involved in the development of Rare Singles since it was a half-written novel.”
