Welsh development agency Ffilm Cymru has selected 11 film-makers for its inaugural Future Producers training and networking programme.

The cohort includes Nan Davies, founder of Cardiff indie One Wave Films, which co-produced feature doc Still Pushing Pineapples and the film Learning to Breathe Underwater; David P Davies, a former executive producer on HBO/BBC drama Industry who founded 5 Acts Films; and Divergence Pictures founder Jess Gardner, whose producer credits include Doctor Who.

The programme will provide bespoke training, coaching and networking opportunities over the course of a week in Cardiff from October 26, running parallel to the EAVE  [European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs] Producers Workshop, and funded by Creative Wales, Arts Council of Wales, the BFI UK Global Screen Fund and ScreenSkills.

“Future Producers is about backing producers with the creative judgement, commercial confidence and international relationships to build ambitious slates and take distinctive Welsh stories to audiences worldwide,” said Arts Council of Wales director of arts Catryn Ramasut.

“This first cohort brings an impressive range of credits, perspectives and experience, alongside a clear appetite to develop, package and deliver productions from Wales onto the global stage.

“I know how valuable it is to step back from the day-to-day demands of development and production and focus on the bigger picture: sharpening your vision, stress-testing scripts, building networks and partnerships and understanding how to navigate other countries financial asks, co-production deals and the international market.

“Bringing that level of access and expertise to Wales is an investment not only in these producers and their companies, but in the strength, scale and long-term sustainability of Welsh cinema. The journey from first idea to the big screen can take years, and we want to back the persistence, tenacity and creative ambition producers need to bring those films to life.”
