Filmmaking on the Frontline: In Conversation with Olly Lambert & Ed Watts

Award-winning filmmakers Ed Watts and Olly Lambert share their experiences and knowledge of documentary filmmaking in hostile environments. They will be offering the opportunity to tell us the story behind the making of two of the most critically acclaimed current affairs documentaries filmed in danger zones today: ‘Escape from ISIS’and Syria: Across the Lines’.

This is a great chance for those wanting to know more about the sensitivities, logistical challenges and technical filmmaking skills that come with working in politically unsafe environments. Watts and Lambert will discuss how they brought such moving but dangerous stories together and the obstacles they faced in the process, as well as answering your questions about the making of these two journalistically important films.

Ed Watts

Ed Watts has filmed over twenty documentaries covering stories ranging from war crimes in the Congo to the colourful lives of residents in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. His film, ‘Escape From Isis’, follows the extraordinary untold story of an Iraqi underground network working to save women kidnapped and trapped in the Islamic State and exposes the state’s brutal treatment of them. It won Amnesty International’s Award for best Human Rights Documentary in 2015, the Royal Television Society’s award for Best International Current Affairs 2016, a Broadcast award for Best News & Current Affairs Programme 2016 and has been nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Current Affairs Documentary.

Since the release of this film. Ed Watt’s has been praised by The Guardian for creating "a breathtakingly bold piece of journalism"

Olly Lambert

Olly Lambert has 17 years’ experience in filmmaking under his belt and has won a dozen awards for his work in areas of conflict, including an Emmy, two BAFTAs, an RTS, a Grierson and the Foreign Press Association award for Journalist of the Year. His film, ‘Syria: Across the Lines’ documents life on both sides of a sectarian frontline in rural Syria as a once-peaceful community breaks apart along ethnic and religious lines. It is regarded as one of the most important pieces of journalism to emerge from Syria’s ongoing conflict. It has won ten prestigious award, including an Emmy, a BAFTA, an RTS and a Grierson.

Olly Lambert has been described by The Times as "one of the most talented documentary filmmakers working in British television"
