Nicola Shindler has got her new indie up and running and is preparing to staff up as productions get under way.

Quay Street Productions – named after the Manchester street on which it is based, which also housed the Granada office where Shindler started her TV career – is bringing in a string of development staff to kickstart the company’s slate.

As at her previous role as managing director of Red Production Company, Shindler told Broadcast she wanted to tell “contemporary, provocative stories, putting the writers at the centre of every project and telling stories from diverse voices”.

However, she acknowledged there was no guarantee that her regular roster of collaborators at Red, such as writers Russell T Davies, Danny Brocklehurst or Amelia Bullmore, will necessarily bring their future projects to Quay Street. “I have to earn their respect and I have to earn them wanting to work with me,” she said.

ITV Studios is backing Quay Street and will distribute its projects, but ITV channels will have first refusal on the indie’s projects.
