I am an academic researcher at Masters level with experience of outreach events, public engagement and writing for general audiences. I am looking for ways to make the transition from academia to the media industry, does anyone have any advice? I am especially interested in factual media.
How can I make the transition from academia to factual media?

As I sure you're aware you're attempting to get into a highly competitive business and you'll probably have to start at the bottom. You might find enthusiasm, creativity, hard work, perseverance etc are more in demand over academic qualifications. Saying that, academic research will stand you in good stead. Factual TV is huge everything from Homes Under the Hammer to Blue Planet - I would suggest find what you like, what interests you, what you think you are qualified for and then approach those indies. Be aware despite having a masters you may have to start running or logging. Good luck.

Thank you very much Simon, this is very helpful!

While I agree with Simon to an extent, I do think that people with other experience (of academia or another industry/life in general) do progress quicker.
You likely have the research skill to move up to Researcher from Runner very quickly. You may be able to go in as a Junior Researcher.
Lots of Researchers/APs didn't take a media degree, and an academic background can be very useful on a show that requires fact checks.
I'd also advise that you use your specialism to your advantage, so if you're a biologist, find a show that needs someone with that background, or that's making content that you have a particular understanding of. This will set you apart from other applicants. Good luck!

It depends on what your subject is, plus the usual heap of luck. For eg, if a production company is looking for a researcher with a science or history background, and you have a track record in that area you'd be in with a good shout. The best way to make your own luck is to consider the kinds of programmes/series you think your background might make you a suitable candidate for, and approach those production companies, asking them if they have any opportunities in that area. What will be key for them is that you can translate your knowledge and make it accessible to a wide mass audience, plus you have good contacts with people who can do the same ie provide stories etc.

Thank you so much for your helpful answers Ruth and Christine, this is encouraging!
