Getting into the industry

I have just finished my degree in Journalism and would love my career in broadcasting or documentaries however, I don't even know where to begin! Has anybody got any suggestions of where I can gain experience? I am really struggling :(

Hi Ellie, I recommend you join the Facebook runners page and read all the info in the pinned post. There’s lots of really helpful advice and the admins of the page are seasoned Production Managers/Line Producers who can answer any questions already not covered. A lot of graduates are joining that particular page now so make sure you read and follow the rules. You’ll find it an invaluable resource.

Watch television! Look at the credits of stuff you like. Contact the company's who mske stuff you like. Try to mert up with their talent managers, Exec Producers and Series Producers. Sadly its one of those industries where work experience can open doors but don't allow yourself to be exploited.Have something to offer - not necessarily a qualification but an enthusiasm and knowledge in a particular area

Hi Ellie,
Definitely make your way over to the runners Facebook group, it’s an absolute godsend.
“People looking for TV work: runners”
Read the resources there and scroll through the group, there is tons of info.
My main other piece of advice is don’t work for free! It won’t benefit you and can actually work against you. There are lots of entry level positions that are paid and can get you your first credits. Again, they’re all on that group so get over there ASAP if you aren’t already!

I'd also recommend researching job roles / genres, that way you can see what aspects really appeal to you - the prospect of digging through piles investigative files for that one piece of information which might support your reporter's arguments; or the idea of running around with a camera on your shoulder getting the best possible shots; or the thought of managing budgets and logistics to get a team to and from a filming location... And do take the lifestyle implications of certain roles into account - different types of routines, pay progression and lengths of contracts for editors, producers, production managers etc.

BBC Work Experience placements are pretty good too. https://www.bbc.co.uk/careers/work-experience
