How to get a researcher job after working in film sales for years?

I'm looking to get any running / research experience I can. I used to work for a film sales agent in London as the Senior Marketing Manager and then I took time off to go sailing around the world. I now want to get stuck into TV.
I've got heaps of experience dealing with people, setting things up, a degree and MA in English Lit but everyone wants you to have been a researcher before - how do you get the first gig?! Thanks for your help :)
