The films illuminated the challenges facing young people aged 16-25, and aired every month across the ITV regions. I worked closely with two producer/directors to develop filming elements, set up shoots and provided on-location support. Young contributors told of their personal journeys, often of a highly sensitive nature, spanning mental illness, sexuality, racism and policing. Production Title: Saints and Scroungers series 4 Company: Flame TV Line Manager: Sarah Rest Programme Length: 30 minutes Genre: Factual Sector: Broadcast Television Description : As the only dedicated 'story researcher' on the series, I worked closely with the series producer to find most of the stories chosen. These featured convicted criminals who had stolen from the public purse (scroungers), and 'saints' who are helping people claim benefits and turn their lives around.
I carried out a mailshot using an established database of organisations and charities which I added to extensively using my own research, and painstakingly followed them up for responses.
Once organisations replied with a suggested story, I used my news sense and grasp of the programme remit to assess its quality before pitching to the series producer and writing a brief from the perspectives of all the contributors I had nurtured for the story. Briefs had to be clear, thorough and chronological to ensure the scriptwriting and editing was properly informed and went smoothly.
I carried out extensive telephone and face-to-face interviews with fraud investigators, benefits advisors, charity workers and members of the public, using my well-honed communication, information-gathering and diplomacy skills, before securing access with some great contributors.
I attended court to cover fraud cases and carried out some of the on-camera interviews with fraud investigators. I arranged several of the interviews in accordance with a tight filming schedule which took the team to a variety of locations across the UK, and gathered supplementary visuals and evidence.
I also helped carry, dismantle and pack away kit. The DV director also showed me the basics of the Canon XF305 and I spent a day helping with filming intended for the series opening sequence. |
