Production Title: Charles & Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding Company: Blakeway Productions Line Manager: Denys Blakeway Programme Length: Feature Length Season: 1 Genre: Historical Documentary Archive Shows Factual Specialist Factual Sector: Broadcast Television Description : At 11:30am on Wednesday 29th July 1981, 20 year old Diana Spencer walked up the aisle of St Paul’s Cathedral towards her dashing prince. It was the fairy tale wedding of the century, with three quarters of a billion watching on around the world.
Using rich archive and interviews with people talking for the first time, this is the revealing and often shocking inside story of the seven days running up to the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles.
Interviewees include people who knew the couple: Mary Robertson – as a nanny Diana looked after her baby boy, Colonel Robert Spencer - a cousin, and Angela Rippon – who carried out a pre-wedding interview as well as presenting the live coverage on the day. We also hear from the chef who baked their wedding cake, and the designer who made that extraordinary dress.
With high unemployment, inflation and rioting, 1981 was a tough year for Britain. The wedding came as a welcome respite, lifting the spirits of the nation. This is a tale of what the jubilant public saw versus the doubt, fear and heartbreak suffered privately by the two individuals, propelled towards a fate they could not control.
We hear the reality of what was going on behind closed doors as the wedding approached: heated arguments; growing suspicion with Charles’ gift of a bracelet to Camilla; struggles dealing with the intense public gaze; and the complex politics of family and close friends. The personal drama even spilled out into full public view, creating a tense and often unbearable atmosphere for the couple at a time of already heightened emotion.
Ultimately, both bride and groom had grave doubts. Diana later said that she had felt like, ‘a lamb to the slaughter’, and Charles agonised before the wedding over his commitment. But with just seven days to go, the juggernaut was unstoppable. |
