Irish ‘mockumentary’ feature Kneecap has won seven of the 14 categories in which it was nominated at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifas).

Rich Peppiatt was named best debut screenwriter for the movie, which was also crowned best British independent film.

Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh, who play themselves in the film, won a joint acting award and the film was further recognised in the categories of casting, editing, original music and music supervision.

Married co-directors Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane picked up the best debut director award for Grand Theft Hamlet [main picture], which also received the Raindance maverick spirit award.

But the film missed out on best documentary feature, which went to Elizabeth Sankey, Jeremy Warmsley, Chiara Ventura and Manon Ardisson for Witches.

The breakthrough producer award went to Balthazar De Ganay and James Bowsher for Santosh which was also named best screenplay.
