Finished East of Eden without having read the book, and I was hooked throughout. The whole cast is magnificent, with Florence Pugh and Hoon Lee the standouts, and the design work, from cinematography to costumes, is first-rate. Zoe Kazan's adaptation is the real triumph: rich, emotionally involving, and easy to follow even for someone coming in cold like moi.
